How to ensure proper performance from shingles in cold climates?

Proper performance from shingles installed and used in cold climates can be achieved by following the recommendations listed below:
- Make sure that the roof is properly ventilated.
- Be careful and patient when handling shingles in cold climates.
- If you are in an area that experiences freezing winter temperatures, eaves protection should be used to reduce water damage from ice dam formation.
- Use self-adhesive underlayments such as Armourbase Stick or Armourbase Pro Plus. These are much safer to use on roofs in cold climate.

- Hand seal bitumen shingles in cold climates with a mastic containing elastomeric polymers like IKO Shingle Stick.
- When applying ridge caps, keep the shingles that are to be used as ridge caps in a warm place so that they will be flexible enough to bend. As alternative some applicators would put the ridge caps in a bucket with pre-warmed water for a minute prior to manipulating them into shape.
- Always use caution and take adequate safety measures when walking and working on a roof in a wintertime.
