
The Regional History Museum in Blagoevgrad, an emblematic cultural center for the entire South-West region, is implementing a strategic project for modernization and energy efficiency, supported under the Operational Program "Regions in Growth". The initiative aims not only at preserving the rich historical heritage, but also at sustainable management of the museum infrastructure in line with European environmental standards.
Without compromising on durability and technical approach, the prudent management of the museum chose the high-tech bitumen membranes from the IKO Carrara series. The material combines reliable waterproofing protection with an active environmental function. Thanks to the mineral layer with titanium dioxide, the surface of the membrane neutralizes nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the air through a photocatalytic reaction – an effect comparable to the effect of a green area. Thus, an otherwise passive structure becomes an active element of the urban ecosystem.
Among other things, IKO Carrara membranes are specially designed for energy roofs, seriously increasing the yield from photovoltaic installations thanks to their unrivalled light reflectivity provided by the sparkling white color of titanium dioxide and the remarkable decrease in roof temperatures on which the photovoltaic park will be built, as planned.
The choice is dictated precisely by their double value – they provide maximum durability and protection from weathering, while contributing to improving air quality and reducing the carbon footprint. This makes them the most suitable solution for an institution with a key public mission, such as the museum.
